Digital Audio Workstation (DAW)
Logic Pro X (our DAW of choice), Cubase, Audacity, and Pro Tools are all examples of Digital Audio Workstations. These are software programs that allow you to record, manipulate, and arrange audio material. All DAWs have pros and cons, and sometimes Logic or Pro Tools feels like LeBron or Jordan. But we’ve tried to lay out a few questions and scenarios that can help you pick a DAW.
Balling on a budget? Audacity is a well-known FREE DAW that we had experience with very early on in our career. It is a fantastic resource for people just getting into recording and want to test the waters before they spend more money on a more advanced DAW. If you already own an Apple computer, you can use the included GarageBand software.
Looking to make beats? Maschine, Ableton, and FL Studio are examples of DAWs that are more friendly to beat-makers. Logic Pro X also just rolled out new features very similar to Ableton’s.
Doing multitrack recording? Something like Logic ($200 w/ an Apple computer) or Pro Tools ($600 for a perpetual license) may be best in this situation.
No matter what DAW you choose, be sure to take advantage of trial periods to get a feel for the working environment before you pay full price.
