Must-Have Plug-Ins

There are countless plug-ins that accomplish a number of different creative and utility purposes for your home studio.

Before we get into our list below, it is important to note that you will be better served learning the ins and outs of plugins and their purpose on stock plugins. Before spending $100s, learn what they do and learn what you need from them.

With that being said, let’s look at a few of the ones that we use most often.

  1. RVOX - a simple but powerful vocal compression plugin. It combines gating, compression, and limiting, making it a great tool for any chain.

  2. TrueVerb - an easy to understand and highly controllable reverb plugin with an early reflections simulator. Quickly adjust EQ and balance for reverb and early reflections for great sounding reverbs.

  3. J37 - our go-to tape saturation plugin that models the tape machine used at Abbey Road Studios. We know that plugins certainly never replace real analog gear, but we appreciate the analog warmth and other creative effects that this tool provides.

  4. PAZ Analyzers - monitoring tools are an incredibly important part of each step in the music creation process. We like PAZ for the compact display of loudness, stereo positioning (including out of phase material), and frequency content.

  5. F6-RTA Dynamic EQ - EQs are a staple in every studio. We like the F6 Floating-Band Dynamic EQ for its precise controls, ability to solo each band to easily identify the frequencies you are looking for, and built in spectrum analyzer.
